Bet Types:

Win – Your pick has to win for your bet to win.
Place – Usually used in horse or greyhound racing. You bet on your selection to finish in a predetermined position, e.g. in the top 3. The position your selection must finish in is predetermined by the bookies dependant on the number of runners in a race.
As a guide the below is from Skybet rules:
2 – 4 Runners Win Only
5 – 7 Runners – place positions 1, 2
8 or more Runners – place positions 1,2,3
16 or more Runners – place positions 1, 2, 3, 4
Each-way – A combined bet of equal value on your selection to win and to place. A £5 each way bet means you place £2.50 on your selection to win and £2.50 on your selection to place. If your selection wins you win on both bets. If your horse places you win on the £2.50 place bet. Please note that the odds for the selection to place are usually around 1/3-1/5 of the odds on the selection to win.
Double chance – (Also known as a handicap +1) this type of bet is usually used for Football matches where you place a bet on 2 out of the 3 possible outcomes. e.g. the home side to win or draw.
Double – A bet on 2 selections. Both must win for a return.
Treble – A bet on 3 selections, all 3 must win for a return.

Forecast bets:

Straight forecast – Pick 2 selections to finish 1st and 2nd in a race. for example you pick horse A to win and horse B to come 2nd. They have to finish in this order for your bet to win.
Reverse forecast – Once again a bet of 2 selections that need to finish 1st and 2nd in a race. The difference here is that if horse B wins with horse A 2nd you still win, and vice versa. You are essentially placing 2 bets here – one on outcome of Horse A wins Horse B 2nd and one on Horse B wins Horse A 2nd.
Tricast – A bet on the outcome of a race where you pick the top 3 in the correct order. This is a single bet.
Handicap betting
Handicap +1 – The selection you pick must draw or win. The +1 means you are giving your team a goal head start.
Handicap -1 – You are giving the opposing team a goal head start. Your selection effectively starts 1-0 down. So they would need to win by 2 goals to cover the handicap.
England 2-0 France – England -1 would be a winner as the effective score is 2-1 England once you have given France the handicap head start.
England 1-1 France – France +1 would be a winner as they would effectively win 2-1 as they had a goal head start.
Handicap betting can also be used in sports such as Rugby and can be used to provide an even money bet on a match where the winner isn’t really in doubt.
e.g. a handicap of Ireland -36 means Ireland need to win by 37 points or more. +36 means they need to lose by less than 36 points.

Asian handicap (AH) betting:

This type of bet effectively eliminates the draw possibility in a 3 way bet. The punter needs to decide which team are the best value on the handicap.
0AH (Draw no bet) – If your team wins the match your bet wins, if the match is a draw you get your stake refunded, if your team lose your bet loses.
-0.25AH – If your team wins your bet wins, if the match is a draw you receive half your stake back, if your team lose the bet loses.
-0.5AH – You are basically betting on your team to win, a draw or a loss results in your bet losing.
-0.75AH – To win the full bet your team needs to win by 2 goals or more, if your team wins by 1 goal you get half your stake back and win the other half of the bet. So on a £50 bet, £25 will be refunded and £25 + your winnings of the bet are returned.
-1AH – If your team wins by 2+ goals your bet wins. If your team wins by 1 goal your stake is returned. A draw or a loss for your team mean the bet loses.
+0.25AH – If your team wins your bet wins. If your team draws you receive half your stake back and the other half of the stake is returned as winnings. So from a £50 bet, £25 is stake refunded and £25 + winnings.
+0.5AH – If your teams draws or wins the bet is a winner. If your team lose the bet loses.
+0.75AH – If your team wins or draws the bet wins. If your team loses by 1 goal you lose half your stake and the other half is refunded. If your team lose by 2 goals or more the bet loses.
+1AH – If your team win or draw your bet wins. If your team loses by 1 goal you get your money back, by 2+ goals your bet loses.
